kép, hanem a mondat maga tűnik populista túlzásnak, hiszen mindent láthattunk, mindent
Hiszen itt nincs is katasztrófa.
A helyzet
A kocsiban régebben mi ültünk, most egyszerre kint
amikor valamennyi berendezése felmondta a szolgálatot. A pilóta hihetetlen lélekjelenléttel
vették a tört-zúzott repülőgépet. A megmentésükre indult katasztrófavédelmi emberek néhány
Szóval itt vagyunk mi, az addig érinthetetlennek gondolt világunk most mégis átalakult,
megfestett, most nincsenek ott.
ami kinő a földből, kikívánkozik. Mi történik, ha Maurizio Cattelan sok vitát kiváltott

meteorját, amely II. János Pál pápára esik, nem katasztrófának, hanem csodának tekintjük?
A pápa rezzenéstelen arcát, a kezében megtartott pásztorbotot az eleve elrendelés sztoikus
elfogadásának. Mi történik, ha a templomtérbe került kivilágított vasúti kocsit csodajelként
nézzük? Mi történik, ha mindez művészi megmentésünk monumentális szimbóluma.
Egyáltalán megmenthető-e a valóság, a művész és a néző?
Érdekes módon néhány hónappal ezelőtt egy karambolos autó állt itt, ezen a helyen,
Németh Hajnal műve: egyértelmű katasztrófakép. Akkor a zene állt a középpontban, az
operába foglalt dráma, most a csend, a hűlt hely. A látványosság akkor Andy Warhol
Katasztrófa sorozatához volt mérhető, most Jeff Koons köztéri szobortervéhez, a darura
akasztott gőzmozdonyhoz. Festői és szürreális kép. A műcsarnoki BBS-kiállításon bemutattak
egy 1963-as filmet, Novák Márk rohangálós burleszkjét, a Kedd-et. Az egyik szaladgálós
részben a főhős hirtelen a Kiscelli Múzeum folyosóján találja magát egy élő oroszlán
társaságában. Elszalad.

A kiállítást megnyitom.

Mélyi József

Opening Speech by József Mélyi  :

Dear Guests,
Is there a borderline between reality and art? It is an old question, which can be answered at least in two ways: yes or no. Or three: yes, no and maybe but differently.

The first answer, that there are no borders, is the most obvious. It is not even necessary to explain it. Since the Japenese earthquake and tsunami the borderline of pictures known only from special effects , which used to seem impossible and we only saw in films, has been pushed even further. Today it is a lot easier to imagine a train or a ship in a temple or an exhibition hall than it was a month or a year ago. The world might be copying catastrophy films or maybe we already possess nearly all pictures. We have imagined and digitalized everything. 'It's beyond imagination' as it used to be said and then everybody could imagine any situation which their spirit could still take. Nowadays it's not the developed picture but this sentence itself that seems a populist exaggeration, as we have had the opportunity to see and imagine everything. From now on the pictures of art and imagined reality are blurred.

The second answer says that the borderline between art and reality is quite firm. We are standing here in an exhibition hall, we feel our feet safely on the ground, while we are imagining how heavy this lit carriage can be, whether it will press in the stones of the floor or not. However, we are sure, that this object in this form couldn't be taken to Műcsarnok due to the weight-bearing capacity of the floor. Although it cannot be fit in the schedule of Műcsarnok, we are watching art here, a painter's work of art. We imagine the faces Zsuzsi Csiszér has fully or partly painted so far, we picture them in the carriage, they might have been sitting in there earlier and now they aren't anywhere, as this is art. A still life – a moment painted, but in real life it's an eternity. Or the other way around. In any case, the border is clear-cut.

The third answer to the question trying to find the borderline between life and art is the most obvious: maybe but differently. Since there is no catastrophy here. We can see a man-made reality here, a construction. A first class railway carriage is sticking out of the ground at an angle of 45°. Obviously it does not penetrate the floor. It is cut and somehow got here. The lights are on, it's operating but there are no victims. There are the ususal photos inside, the photos of MÁV Co.'s (Hungarian Railways). The thing is that probably the space itself has turned, our world has got out of the widely accepted track. It has simply turned off. We used to be sitting inside and now suddenly we are outside, looking at this phenomenon, checking whether we are still standing on our feet. A few months ago in Russia an aeroplane heading from the Arctic circle to Moscow was flying over the taiga when all its equipment broke down. The pilot, with incredible presence of mind and skill, put the old TU-154 down on a land with young pine trees, then it was sliding for several kilometres and finally stopped. The passangers got out without injuries and looked at the wreckage closely. It took the rescue team a few hours to get there while the passangers were picking mushrooms in a nearby forest. Nice image, worth painting it. So here we are and our world, which seemed untouchable, now has changed, it closes some angle with the earlier reality, it is like refraction of light, it is like death. The people Zsuzsi Csiszér fully or partly painted in the past years are not there now. They are here, this side now. Everything has changed fundamentally, therefore, there are no standard points in our lives, no base of comparison, everything is like a passage, a big maybe.

We only understand a disaster when we have a base of comparison. When we can say that MÁV (Magyar Állam Vasutak: Hungarian Railways) means Magyar Általános Valóság (Hungarian General Reality). But what if reality and art, either separately or together, are not so obvious and the simple explanation of catastrophy does not work. For example, it is rather a miracle and not a catastrophy. What if we have a look at the railway carriage sticking out of the ground from a different point of view. As if it was something growing out of the ground. What if we consider Maurizio Cattelan's highly debated meteorite, which hit Pope John Paul II, a miracle rather than a catastrophy? What if we consider the motionless face of the Pope, the crosier in his hand as the stoic acceptance of predestination? What happens if we take the the lit railway carriage in the temple hall as a sign of miracle? What happens if this is the monumental symbol of our artistic rescue? Can reality, the artist and the spectator be rescued at all?

Interestingly, a few months ago a crashed car was exhibited here, the work of Hajnal Németh: an obvious image of catastrophy. That time music was in the centre, drama involved in opera. Now, the emphasis is on silence and the deserted place. That time the sight was similar to Andy Warhol's Death and Disaster paintings, now to Jeff Koons's sculpture, an enormous steam locomotive hanging from a construction crane. It is a picturesque and surrealistic image. At the BBS Balázs Béla Studio) exhibition in Műcsarnok a film from 1963 was shown: Márk Novák's burlesque, Tuesday. In one scene the main character finds himself in the company of a real lion in the corridor of Museum Kiscell. He runs away. A few moments later, when the atomic bomb has already exploded, the escaping main character asks only one question: Well, who the hell will save us?
